Nominations for Mildura Rural City Council’s 2025 Australia Day Awards are now closed. Winners will be announced at our 2025 Australia Day event.

2025 Australia Day Awards Nominees

Citizen of the Year

When considering this award, the judging panel regarded the following criteria:

  • Has made an outstanding contribution to the community in a voluntary capacity;
  • Has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing the welfare and wellbeing of the community that have short or long-term benefits for others; and
  • Has been an inspiration/role model to the community.

Meet the nominees:

Gail Mottram

Gail is the founder and president of Greening Mildura, placing herself at the forefront for caring for people and the environment. Her dedication to the environment has helped make Mildura a greener place.

Maureen Wandel

Maureen is an active member of the Underbool community, with her passion for community welfare including involvement across multiple sectors, including sport, education, health and social support.

Anthony (Tony) Dal Corobbo

Tony has been an active member of the Mildura community his whole life. He has volunteered for groups including, but not limited to, Sun Assist, the L to P program, while being a lifetime member of the Lions Club.

Katrina Umback

Katrina has made a remarkable impact on the Mildura community through her heart health advocacy, raising nearly $100,000 for the Heart Foundation since 2019. Her initiatives, including free heart health screenings and efforts to establish a catheterisation lab, have significantly improved cardiovascular awareness and healthcare in the region.

Baljinder Sandhu

Baljinder has strengthened the Mildura community by driving economic growth and job creation. His support for cultural and sporting events, promotion of local agriculture through international trade, and contributions to welfare initiatives highlight his dedication to the region’s prosperity.

Young Citizen of the Year

When considering this award, the judging panel regarded the following criteria:

  • Has made an outstanding contribution to the community in a voluntary capacity;
  • Has been an inspiration/role model to others; and
  • Has shown achievements in community activities, academic, sporting, personal, cultural, environmental and/or social responsibility.

Meet the nominees:

Emily Ablett

Emily has shown outstanding leadership as a member of the Mildura Rural City Council Youth Council, contributing to youth-focused projects and a strategic youth survey. Her engagement Councillors and Council staff on key issues has positively impacted her community and nurtured her development as a young leader.

Anares Chisakula

Anares has shown remarkable resilience, excelling academically and contributing to her community. She supports her family by caring for her two-year-old sister and assisting her mother, exemplifying strength, dedication and kindness.

Mason Rogers

Mason’s determination, initiative persistence, work ethic and commitment to learning highlight his resilience and dedication to achieving personal career aspirations.

Connor Burns

Connor has excelled in the local theatre scene, starring in notable roles like Eric in The Little Mermaid Jr and Jack in Into the Woods, while also volunteering for set building and painting during his VCE studies. His talent and dedication earned him the rare distinction of winning both The Gong and The Dame awards in the same season.

Jack Carter

Jack, a self-taught BMX freestyle rider, began during COVID by building his own ramps and practicing tirelessly despite injuries. With family support and professional coaching, he placed third in his first international competition and the Victorian State competition, showcasing his resilience, tenacity and dedication while balancing school and work.

Anares and Madeleine Chisakula

Since moving to Mildura, Anares and Madeleine have embraced their new community through various activities inspiring others in their peer groups to do the same.

Kyshia Murray

Kyshia has displayed a lot of resilience and persistence throughout her year which is most evident in her art.

Frankee-Mae Keenan

Frankee-Mae began volunteering with SRS at 15, she has since earned two VET qualifications while excelling in her studies, later receiving multiple awards, including the 2024 SuniTAFE VETDSS Student of the Year for her dedication to supporting children with high-care disabilities.

Electric Light Theatre

Junior Producers: Jack Hoyle, Georgia Judd, Aleisha Hoyle and Kiata Bruton

The Electric Light Theatre (ELT) Junior Producers program develops creativity, leadership and technical theatre skills through roles in costume design, stagecraft, choreography and character development. Georgia, Jack, Aleisha and Kiara have played key roles in productions like Welcome to Rio and The Door List, enhancing morale and fostering creativity, while also contributing to schools, Scouts, and other groups, preparing them for future opportunities in theatre and beyond.

Community Event or Project of the Year

When considering this award, the judging panel regarded the following criteria:

  • Four or more people were involved in conducting a successful not-for-profit project, event or activity,
  • The event/project performed a service to the community, raised funds for a community charity, event or project
  • The event/project received recognition and credit from the community through a cultural, environmental or sporting achievement within the Mildura Rural City Council municipality

Meet the nominees:

The Mallee Drifters Club Inc. Show & Shine 2024

The Mallee Drifters Club hosted a highly successful Show & Shine event at Ouyen Lake, showcasing vehicles of all types and fostering social inclusion. Participants for the 2024 event nearly doubled previous years. The event raised significant funds for local causes, promoted tourism and encouraged ongoing enthusiasm for vehicles, mentorship and community engagement.

Just a Farmer – Q&A and Exclusive Viewing

The Just A Farmer screening and Q&A event in September 2024 raised money to fund future Northern Mallee Leaders (NML) scholarships while fostering critical conversations about mental health in rural communities. By combining a powerful film, expert panel discussions, and accessible resources, the event united the community and created lasting momentum for mental health awareness and rural resilience initiatives.

Mildura Weir Parkrun

Mildura Weir parkrun is a free, inclusive weekly five kilometre event that promotes physical and mental health, community connection, and outdoor activity. The event attracts more than 150 participants of all abilities each and every week. Beyond its health benefits, the event boosts the local economy by drawing parkrun tourists and fostering engagement with local businesses, while celebrating volunteers and strengthening community ties.

ChangeFest24 Mildura

ChangeFest 2024 Mildura was a national event showcasing community-led, place-based change, with more than 480 delegates and a strong focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, collaboration and storytelling. The event activated Mildura’s riverfront precinct, strengthened local and national partnerships, and inspired future community initiatives while highlighting the importance of grassroots, inclusive approaches to transformative change.

2024 Country Leagues Football Association Country Championships

The June long weekend saw more than 1,400 competitors and their families gather in Mildura for the 2024 Country Leagues Football Association Country Championships, drawing visitors from across Victoria and filling local accommodations and eateries. The event provided a competitive platform for junior players to showcase their skills, earning praise as one of the best championships and boosting Mildura’s reputation as a premier host destination.

Nomination forms are only available when the nomination period is open. 

Council will publish the nomination period in local print media, this website, on its Facebook page and through a formal media release. 

Nominations require information about who is being nominated, reasons for nominating, who has nominated them and details of referees.   

When the nomination period is open, you can obtain a copy of the form in the following ways:

  • Complete the online nomination process
  • Download a nomination form, print and return to us by the closing time and date
  • Call or email us for a nomination form to be sent to you electronically or by mail
