Mildura Mayor Mark Eckel joined Mayors across Victoria today in signing the Age-Friendly Victoria declaration, signalling Council’s commitment to ensuring our municipality is an age-friendly community.

The declaration is a commitment to better plan for the needs of seniors and enhance the quality of life for people as they age through better State and local planning.

It aims to promote the inclusion of older people, support services, business and community leaders in achieving these aims.

Councillor for Community Wellbeing and Services Min Poole said Council’s signing of the Age-Friendly Victoria declaration was particularly important in Sunraysia.

“As a municipality with an ageing population, this declaration has the potential to impact positively on a significant proportion, and valued demographic, of our population,” Cr Poole said.

“By signing this declaration, we’re committing to ensuring older peoples’ decisions and lifestyle choices are respected and taken into account when planning to meet their future needs – ultimately aimed at enhancing their quality of life as they age.”

Age-Friendly communities encourage active ageing, good health, security and community participating for Victorian seniors.

Cr Eckel officially signed the declaration this afternoon, witnessed by representatives of key service providers and organisations involved in the wellbeing of older people in our community, who were then asked to sign a letter of support and endorsement.
