Find out how the NDIS will impact you

Mildura Rural City Council will next month host the first in a series of information sessions and workshops detailing how the impending introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will affect local families.
Organised in partnership with Victoria’s peak body for people on the autism spectrum disorder – Amaze - the information session will be held on Thursday 14 June at the Benetook Room of the Alfred Deakin Centre, starting at 10am.
Councillor for Community Development and Gender Equality Ali Cupper said the information sessions were particularly important for people on the autism spectrum, as well as their families and supporters.
“The NDIS will impose significant changes to the way disability services are delivered and accessed, making it vitally important to plan ahead,” Cr Cupper said.
“Next month’s information session will lay out what these changes are, how they’ll impact residents, and importantly, how best to navigate the new system to ensure residents aren’t disadvantaged.”
Four free workshops will then be provided between July and October, which aim to increase the capacity of people with autism and their families to exercise choice and control under the NDIS.
The workshops will cover the following important topics:
- the NDIS
- pre-planning
- writing a Carer and Participant statement
- setting and writing goals
- effective communication
- advocacy
- community connections and peer support
“I’d encourage people to take advantage of this information session, which is very much a two-way session, allowing residents to ask any questions they may have as well,” Cr Cupper said.
