Mildura Rural City Council is inviting the region’s motorcyclists to take to the road this Sunday, June 3 to help stop violence against women.

Council’s Ride Sunday event aims to raise money for White Ribbon Australia and its plight to increase awareness, and ultimately end violence against women.

The event is open to anyone with a motorcycle licence and will start at 10am from Council’s Madden Avenue offices.

Once under way, riders will make their way to Werrimull for lunch before making the return leg to Mildura.

Council’s General Manager Development and White Ribbon Committee Chair Mandy Whelan encouraged the many motorcyclists in the area to take part.

“We know there are a lot of keen motorcyclists in our area, so we thought it would be a great way for people to get out and enjoy their passion, all the while helping to stop violence against women by raising funds for White Ribbon,” Ms Whelan said.

“Unfortunately, we know that there are many cases of domestic violence against women in our region, and White Ribbon is a very powerful way for us to publicly say that this is simply not acceptable and must change.

“As Mildura’s first White Ribbon-accredited workplace we organise a number of events throughout the year to raise awareness and funds for this very important initiative, and we’re hoping that Ride Sunday becomes one of our more popular fund-raising events.”

Ms Whelan said that by taking part, Sunraysia riders would be joining possibly hundreds of thousands across the world in riding for charity this weekend.

“We’ve linked our event to the international Ride Sunday movement, which encourages motorcyclists across the world to ride for a charity of their choice this Sunday – in our case we’ve nominated White Ribbon,” she said.

“Ride Sunday is a trusted, and well respected organisation that supports some of Australia’s biggest charities, including White Ribbon, ensuring all money raised reaches its intended target.”

Riders are to meet at Council’s Madden Avenue offices at 10am for a 10.30am start.

People wishing to take part can register online at www.ridesunday.com/join/ride/mildura-white-ribbon-ride or pay on the day with a $25 donation.
