Mildura Rural City Council ratepayers should start receiving their 2018/2019 rate notices in the mail this week.

Just over half of the annual revenue needed for Council to operate is collected through rates and is used to provide more than 100 vital Council services, facilities and programs for the more than 50,000 residents in our community.

Mildura Mayor Mark Eckel said 2018/2019 rate notices would reflect the 2.25 per cent rate increase endorsed by Councillors in June this year as part of Council’s ongoing efforts to curb rate increases.

“We’re certainly conscious of our residents’ ability to pay, and once again haven’t applied to the Essential Services Commission for an exemption to the 2.25 per cent cap as some Victorian councils have done,” Cr Eckel said.

The Mayor highlighted the need for residents who may have relocated in the past 12 months to ensure their contact details are up to date.

“If you’ve moved or changed addresses, even if it was many months ago, and not updated your details with Council, there’s still a chance your rate notice will be sent to your previous address,” Cr Eckel said.

“If you know you should be receiving a rate notice and haven’t done so, please let our Council staff know, ensuring you have as much time as possible to pay your rates.”

An information flyer sent out with rate notices explains how rates are calculated and the different ways people can pay their rates.

Council rates can be paid up front in one lump sum or by quarterly instalments.

Full upfront payments must be made by 15 February 2019.  People using the quarterly instalment option must make their first instalment payment by Monday, 1 October 2018.

Rates can be paid in person at any of Council’s Service Centres, online and in person at Australia Post, via BPAY, mail or via Centrepay for those receiving Centrelink payments.

Residents can also pay by direct debit by visiting Council’s website and filling in a direct debit request form.

Anyone experiencing financial difficulties or having trouble making rates payments should contact Council as soon as possible to discuss their circumstances and make alternative arrangements.
