Bike Ed School Program

walking and cycling plan.jpg

Mildura Rural City Council is supporting Mildura RoadSafe Community to deliver the Bike Ed program in schools.

This program gives children the opportunity to learn about safe riding behaviours, road rules and riding in a shared environment. It aligns with the Victorian Curriculum and has been specifically developed to be delivered in Victorian schools.

This program has been tested and evaluated in schools and is supported by the TAC and Victorian Department of Transport and Planning. It contains unit plans, lesson plans and teaching resources needed to make implementing bike riding education in schools easy. The only resources required by the school are common PE equipment like cones, as well as bikes and helmets.

Who can run Bike Ed?

The program is designed to be delivered by PE teachers within a school environment.

What if there are no trained PE teachers?

Please contact Tressna Martin from Mildura RoadSafe Community on 0457 745 685 or roadsafemildura@gmail.com

How can Council and Mildura Roadsafe Community help?

Council has a bike ed trailer with 10 bikes and helmets available for participating schools to borrow for the Bike Ed program.

How do I hire Council's bike trailer?

Bookings are essential, please email sanam.chhusyabaga@mildura.vic.gov.au with your school's name, a contact person and details, and the dates you require the trailer.

Benefits of Bike Ed

Safe cycling needs our bike riders, including our youngest and most vulnerable bike riders, to have the best knowledge, skills and information available to make safe choices.

The Bike Ed school program is an in-school program that allows and encourages school students to learn about road rules, riding in a shared environment and safe riding behaviours. It also uses practical lessons to ensure riders have the physical abilities to ride safely.

The program also provides foundational skills to enable older students to ride independently.

Cycling has several benefits; it’s healthy and active, it’s low-cost and it helps to ease congestion at peak traffic times and it’s great for the environment.
