Mildura and District Historical Society Inc.

The Mildura & District Historical Society is housed in the historic Carnegie Centre, a beautiful building erected in 1908 as the Carnegie Library.

The Society was formed in 1955 and since then has undertaken the enormous task of collecting, cataloguing and documenting all that is historically significant, to be preserved for future generations. In addition the society has published books and has number available for sale. Photos from our collection may be inspected and copies ordered.

All resources are made available to the public for research into family and local history.

The displays, constantly being changed and added to, show much that is of interest in the exciting history of this district, particularly following the establishment of the irrigation colony by the Chaffey Brothers in 1887.

There are several special collections within the total collection, including the Chaffey Collection, Mildura Base Hospital collection 1892-2000, the Sister City collection, the Oswald collection of early photographs. The Mayoral Robes, The Embroidered Crest of Shire of Mildura & City of Mildura Woven Crest, The H.M.A.S. Collection and the 7th Battalion Flags from the Mildura Rural City Council Collection.

Anyone wishing to make a donation of photos or artefacts should speak to the member on duty.

The Society is run by Volunteer staff who are dedicated to keeping Mildura's history alive. They organize historic displays throughout the centre for public and handle any historical queries that you may have. If they cannot answer your question, they will find someone who can help you will your queries.

Should you be interested in joining the society you will be made most welcome at our monthly meeting, held in the Carnegie Centre at 7.30 pm on the first Wednesday of each month. Guest speakers are invited to share their knowledge of varied subjects. each meeting is followed with Coffee/Tea.
