The Showdown is on, with bragging rights, and prizes on the line!

Nominations are now open for our 2025 Nature Strip Showdown – your chance to prove your green thumb skills are the best in the region.

Nominations are open across three categories:

Landscaped

A landscaped nature strip is one which has been planted with low growing, hardy and drought tolerant plants. These plants should be Australian species that contribute to urban biodiversity. Please note, landscaped nature strips may contain areas of native grass, however grass cover cannot be greater than 75 per cent.

Judging Criteria

  • Aesthetics – overall appearance and presentation
  • Drought tolerant, low use water
  • Australian native species
  • Contains several different species

Grassed

A nature strip which is more than 75 per cent grass will be judged in the grassed category.

The grass must be a hardy, drought tolerant variety, either a native species, buffalo, kikuyu or couch. The grass area must be level and free of any tripping hazards.

Judging Criteria

  • Aesthetics – overall appearance and presentation
  • Grass – native species
  • Street tree (if permitted)

Best Makeover/New subdivision

Greatest improvement in the last 24 months assessed from IntraMaps or photos. This can either be landscaped or grassed and will be judged using the appropriate criteria above.

Mandatory criteria for all nature strips

  • No hard surfaces
  • No structures
  • No large rocks, stones, gravel or pebbles (greater than 20mm)
  • No artificial turf
  • Clear footpath or roadway, safe access for pedestrians
  • Shrubs less than 600 mm in height

Prizes

The prize in each category is a $500 Mildura City Heart gift card. Winners will be judged by Greening Mildura.

What is a nature strip?

A nature strip is the strip of public land between a property boundary and the adjacent kerb or street. A nature strip is usually grassed with one or more street trees and may contain water, sewerage, gas, power or internet beneath them. The Urban Nature Strip Policy and supporting guidelines below have been developed to help and support in the creation of your own safe and successful nature strip area.

Terms and Conditions

  1. The promoter is Mildura Rural City Council, 108 Madden Avenue, Mildura VIC 3500.
  2. Only addresses located in the Mildura Rural City Council municipal area and registered with the Nature Strip Showdown, using the online form via www.mildura.vic.gov.au/naturestripcomp will be eligible to win.
  3. Employees of Mildura Rural City Council and Members of Greening Mildura, and their direct relatives, and anyone otherwise connected with the organisations, cannot enter.
  4. There is no entry fee and no purchase necessary to enter.
  5. By entering an entrant is indicating their agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions.
  6. Entry and details of how to enter are via www.mildura.vic.gov.au/naturestripcomp
  7. Only one entry will be accepted per residence. Multiple entries from the same residence will be considered as one.

  9. Entries will open on at 8am on Thursday 13 March 2025 and close at 5pm on Friday 4 April 2025. No entries will be permitted outside of these dates.
  10. No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason.
  11. The promoter reserves the right to cancel or amend these terms and conditions without notice in the event of a catastrophe, war, civil or military disturbance, natural disaster or any actual or anticipated breach of any applicable law or regulation or any other event outside of the promoter’s control. Any changes will be notified to entrants as soon as possible by the promoter.
  12. The promoter is not responsible for inaccurate prize details supplied to any entrant by any third party connected with this competition.
  13. The prizes for Best Landscaped, Best Grassed and Best Make-over/New Subdivision shall be: A Mildura City Heart voucher to the value of $500.
  14. One winner will be selected for each of the following three categories: Best Landscaped, Best Grassed and Best Make-over/New Subdivision.
  15. The prizes are as stated and no cash or other alternatives will be offered. The prizes are not transferable. Prizes are subject to availability and we reserve the right to substitute any prize with another of equivalent value without giving notice.
  16. The Best Landscaped, Best Grassed and Best Make-over/New Subdivision will be selected by Greening Mildura, based on judging criteria located at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/naturestripcomp
  17. Winners will be notified by telephone within 14 days of the closing date (pending the judging panel completing assessments and the number of entries received). If the winners cannot be contacted or do not claim their prize within 14 days of notification, we reserve the right to withdraw the prize from the winner and pick a replacement winner.
  18. The promoter will notify the winner when and where the prize can be collected/is delivered.
  19. The promoter’s decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  20. The competition and these terms and conditions will be governed by Australian law and any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Australia.
  21. The winners agree to the use of their name and photograph in any publicity material, as well as their entry. Any personal data relating to the winner or any other entrants will be used solely in accordance with current Australian privacy laws and will not be disclosed to a third party without the entrant’s prior consent. The winners’ names will be available 28 days after closing date by emailing the following address: mrcc@mildura.vic.gov.au
  22. This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook or any other social network. You are providing your information to Mildura Rural City Council and not to any other party.   23. Mildura Rural City Council shall have the right, at its sole discretion and at any time, to change or modify these terms and conditions, such change shall be effective immediately upon posting to this webpage.
  24. Mildura Rural City Council also reserves the right to cancel the competition if circumstances arise outside of its control.
