Deakin Avenue centre median redevelopment Stage 3
We're enhancing the aesthetics of the Deakin Avenue centre median between Seventh and Eighth Streets. This project forms part of the Deakin Avenue Landscape Master Plan and continues recently completed works through to Tenth Street.

Project highlights

July 2006: Council adopts Deakin Avenue Masterplan.
2011-2012: Development of concept plans for Deakin Avenue centre median redevelopment between Seventh and Tenth Streets.
2017: Stage 1 of the Deakin Avenue centre median redevelopment between Ninth and Tenth Streets completed.
2017 - 2019: Detailed design work completed for Stage 2 of the centre median redevelopment between Eighth and Ninth Streets, including consultation with Council's heritage advisor to ensure appropriate treatment of historical monuments.
May 2021: Work starts on Stage 2 of Deakin Avenue centre median redevelopment between Eighth and Ninth Streets.
Late 2021: Work completed on Stage 2 of Deakin Avenue centre median redevelopment between Eighth and Ninth Streets.
January 2024: Green light given for third stage of Deakin Avenue redevelopment between Seventh and Eighth Streets.
May 2024: Works begin on third stage, including the decommissioning of the ageing public toilets, preparation and demolition works.
Appropriate treatment and preservation of historic monuments remains a key aspect of the Deakin Avenue centre median redevelopment.
One of the most prominent monuments is the DeSailly Rotunda. The steps of the rotunda have been realigned to provide safer and better access to the rotunda and improve the aesthetics of the site, in line with the approved Deakin Avenue Masterplan.
Restoration of the King George V Memorial Fountain and DeSailly Rotunda have also been undertaken in line with specialist advice and contractors.
These works were completed during the second stage of the project.
The majority of the $1.9 million redevelopment has been funded though $1.2 million from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.
