walking and cycling plan.jpg

Mildura Rural City Council is working with the Department of Transport and Planning and the Transport Accident Commission to make pedestrian activity in Merbein safer for everyone.

The suite of upgrades will include:

  • A Raised Pedestrian (Wombat) Crossing to be installed on Ranfurly Way/Commercial Street at the Ritchies IGA Supermarket
  • A Raised Pedestrian (Wombat) Crossing across Railway Parade joining the Post Office with the Ritchies IGA Supermarket
  • The replacement of the existing Zebra Crossing on Ranfurly Way/Commercial Street with a Raised Pedestrian (Wombat) Crossing
  • The installation of three mid-block Raised Safety Platform treatments along Chaffey Street
  • The installation of a 40km/h Raised Safety Platform threshold treatment at Commercial Street and Reilly Street
  • Upgrade existing children crossing into Wombat Crossing at Park Street
  • The installation of 5 x 40km/h Traffic Island threshold treatments along Railway Avenue and Obryan Street
  • Areawide speed reduction to 40km/hr except some laneways

These works were first identified as part of the Merbein Pedestrian and Cycling Plan. They are being delivered thanks to the Victorian Government’s $23million Safe Pedestrian Infrastructure program, which is delivering safety improvements along busy pedestrian routes to slow traffic and make our communities safer and more walkable.

Background

In 2022 Mildura Rural City Council prepared a pedestrian and cyclist safety strategic plan to improve the safety and wellbeing of pedestrians and cyclists in line with the Council's vision for the community in Merbein.

Merbein has recorded 20 crashes over the past 10 years – two of which were related to pedestrians.

Access and safe movement for Merbein community will improve safe travel connections to facilities such as - Merbein P10 School and Merbein CBD.
