31 community and recreation groups share in $229,000+ grant funding
Published on 25 November 2021
31 different community groups and sporting clubs have benefited from the latest round of Mildura Rural City Council’s Community Grants program.
The successful grant applicants will share in more than $229,000 to deliver important projects and initiatives that benefit the wider community.
Mildura Mayor Liam Wood acknowledged the pivotal role community groups and volunteer organisations play in strengthening local communities and supporting residents.
“These groups and organisations really are the backbone of our communities,” Cr Wood said.
“Providing grants is one way Council can support the valuable work of community groups and thank the hundreds of volunteers who give up their time to make a difference.”
“Whether it be through arts, culture, sport, recreation, community connection, or environmental activities, I look forward to seeing how each grant recipient continues to contribute to making ours a great region to live,” Cr Wood said.
Among the recipients are Mildura Storm BMX Club who will use their $15,000 grant to construct a storage shed at their Aerodrome Ovals complex.
Club President Rob Faux said storage space was at a premium as member numbers grew.
“Five years ago we were lucky to have ten riders show up for a meet,” Rob said.
“Now we have around 60 riders and around 120 members and everyone is very keen to be back on the track again after lockdowns.”
Like most sporting and community groups, hard-working volunteers give up their time to keep the Mildura BMX Club running.
“It’s worth it when you see the difference it can make to a young kids’ life just by getting on a bike and being involved in the Club,” Rob said.
“We raise a bit of revenue through member fees and the canteen on race days. But it would take us a long time to raise $15,000, so we’re very grateful to receive a grant from Council”
Underbool Bowls Club received a $3,000 grant to purchase maintenance equipment, while Merbein Golf Club will put their $15,000 grant towards fitting out the kitchen in their new clubhouse.
A $1,672 grant will go towards new uniforms for Sunraysia Cancer Resources’ volunteer staff, who provide invaluable support and practical assistance to people diagnosed with cancer in our region.
OzFish Unlimited will invest their $10,000 grant in a series of restoration works to protect threatened native fish species at Butlers Creek, which forms part of the Kings Billabong Nature reserve.
