A kaleidoscope of colourful activities for the kids these holidays

Published on 16 June 2015

Looking for something to entertain the kids these school holidays?  Mildura Rural City Council’s Libraries and Mildura Arts Centre have a host of fun activities planned to keep the kids busy on even the coldest winter’s day.

Taking inspiration from the Kaleidoscope exhibition currently on show, Mildura Arts Centre's winter school holiday program set to take on a decidedly colourful theme. Fast becoming a holiday favourite, the kids program at MAC will include an opportunity for the kids to create their own bright, colourful artworks and have them displayed in Gallery 5.

Arts and Culture Portfolio Councillor Jill Joslyn said the MAC school holiday program offers children the opportunity to learn new skills and be creative in a fun environment.

“There’s been a real change in the way people view art galleries.  They’re no longer just quiet, solemn places,” Cr Joslyn said. “We realise by opening the doors to our young residents, we’re actually creating a generation who will grow with MAC into the future.”

In addition to the painting workshop on Tuesday 30 June, a second MAC workshop on Wednesday 1 July will teach children how to make pinch pots and create colourful chameleon designs.

The workshops at MAC are free, don’t require any skills, just a sense of fun and adventure and children and their accompanying adults are encouraged to wear bright colour clothing with wild patterns.  The Kaleidoscope exhibition is a fun showcase with a focus on colour and is on show until Sunday 5 July.

The popular Library school holiday program is also back with 26 activities scheduled over the two weeks at the Merbein, Red Cliffs, Irymple and Mildura libraries.

“As usual there are some fantastic activities planned at our libraries for primary school aged children,” said Cr Joslyn.

“Council subsidises the programs to keep costs as low as possible,” said Cr Joslyn.  “This season the costs have been capped at $1.60 per child per session which makes it affordable for everyone. “

The Library Winter School Holiday Program includes the much loved Lego activities, as well as a Cardboard Critters, Snow Man building and the Eye Ball Bouquet activity just to name a few.

Bookings are required for activities at the libraries and also at Mildura Arts Centre and further information is available by contacting them directly.
