Acclaimed ANZAC performance to visit Cardross and Mildura

Published on 08 April 2015

The courage of young Australian soldiers fighting in World War I will be remembered through a series of poems, stories and songs when Mildura Arts Centre brings the acclaimed The Anzac on the Wall to our region this month.

The performance, which will show at both the Cardross Hall and at Mildura Arts Centre, also features the Lone Pine Guitar on loan from Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance.  The Lone Pine Guitar was made from a branch of the famous Lone Pine tree which was planted from a seed from Turkey after World War I and grew at The Shrine until 2005.

The Lone Pine Guitar is beautifully inlaid with mother of pearl ANZAC images and the immortal words of the Ode of Remembrance.

Arts and Culture portfolio Councillor Jill Joslyn said the performance will give people a wonderful lead in to the ANZAC Day commemorations.

The ANZAC on the Wall is the story of Danny Clancy, a Light Horseman who travelled to Gallipoli and then to France during World War I,” Cr Joslyn explained.  “While the performance tells his story through music, humour and poetry, it could quite easily be the story of any young Australian who went away to battle 100 years ago.”

A special performance has also been scheduled for Thursday 16 April at 7pm at the Cardross Hall.

“Council is keen to make our arts and cultural activities available outside the main precinct at MAC,” Cr Joslyn said.  “This type of performance is perfect because the setting of a community hall resonates with the history and the emotion of communities left stripped of their young men.”

Singers, songwriters and entertainers, Jim Brown and Vince Brophy will bring Danny Clancy to life.

Jim Brown, a well-known former news and current affairs journalist, wrote the award winning poem Anzac on the Wall which sets the scene for The Anzac on the Wall. While Vince Borphy, is an accomplished singer and songwriter who has performed across Australia and overseas.  Together Jim and Vince bring their love of music and poetry to life in this moving tribute to Australian bravery.

The Anzac on the Wall is presented by Mildura Arts Centre and Shantyman Productions and more information about the performance is available online at www.theanzaconthewall.com.au
