Achievements of our young people to be celebrated

Tickets are now on sale for the 2015 Mildura Rural City Council Youth Awards Recognition Dinner to be held at the Alfred Deakin Centre on Thursday 16 April.
The awards were first given out three years ago as a way to say thank you to local under 25’s who do their bit to support the many events, programs and people in our region. Nominations closed at the end of February with 60 young people nominated in three categories.
Community Wellbeing and Services Councillor Sharyon Peart said the event, which will be celebrated during National Youth Week, is a great opportunity for people to publicly recognise the contribution our teenagers and young adults make to our community
“Once again we have been really delighted by the quality of the nominations this year,” Cr Peart said. “The number of nominations received were slightly down compared to last year, but it’s clear people have put a lot of thought into their nominations.
“There’s clearly some very motivated, inspirational young people in our region and it’s great that awards such as these can recognise someone’s hard work and hopefully give them the determination to go even further.”
This year there were three categories and nominations were open to people aged from 12 to 25 years who live, work, volunteer or study in Mildura Rural City Council.
“Once again there are awards for both individuals and groups,” Cr Peart said. “We have some very dedicated young people in our midst and I think the maturity they show, in sometimes very trying circumstances, is something to be really proud of.”
Nominations were received in three categories this year:
- Youth Volunteer Award - Recognises a young person who has given up his/ her valuable time and effort for the benefit of a community organisation or the community more generally
- Youth Group Award - Recognises a group of young people who have shown outstanding dedication through their involvement or participation in the community and have made a significant difference.
- Youth Carer Award - Recognises a young person who is the primary carer for a family member, relative or friend with a disability, mental illness or chronic condition
Tickets for the semi-formal event are $20 each and include a 2 course meal. Tickets are available for purchase from both Council’s Madden Avenue and Deakin Avenue service centres or by telephoning Youth Services on (03) 50188100.
