Arguably our region’s biggest celebration of Aboriginal culture and heritage, the annual NAIDOC Corroboree Community Event will return to Nowingi Place this Saturday 16 April.

The event is being delivered in partnership between Mildura Rural City Council’s Ngiwa Yarna (Aboriginal Action) Committee and the Yuranga Local Aboriginal Network and is making its return to our region’s calendar of events after a two-year, COVID-enforced break.

The 2022 Corroboree will also mark the first time the event has taken place as part of our region's bumper Easter long weekend.

Ngiwa Yarna Committee Chair Thelma Chilly said a sensational line-up of performers had been secured for the 2022 event.

“We have some remarkable talent lined up to entertain the crowds,” she said. “This includes Kutcha Edwards who will also act as MC, Willy Hannah, the Tyianu Tyangi Women's Group, Maraura Barkintji Wiimbia Noongoo, Brian Hunt, the Taya Thomas Dance Group and Phunctional.

“The event will be capped off with a Corroboree – a traditional Aboriginal Dance Ceremony.”

A traditional smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country will also take place, with several stalls, workshops and culturally significant activities planned.

“Our committee is really excited to bring the annual Corroboree back following two COVID-interrupted years, and to be running the event alongside other iconic Easter weekend events like the Mildura 100 Ski Race is just incredible,” Thelma said.

“We certainly encourage the community to come down and be a part of the celebration. There will be something for everyone, while also offering a chance to celebrate our local Aboriginal culture.”

The Mildura NAIDOC Corroboree Community Event will run from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday 16 April.
