Nominations are now open for Mildura Rural City Council’s 2016 Australia Day Awards.

The Awards, which are announced at Council’s official Australia Day celebrations every year, are an opportunity to recognise and pay tribute to the people and groups that help make our community great.

Mayor Glenn Milne said that this is a great way to acknowledge those who made an outstanding contribution to local lives and communities in the last twelve months.

“There are three different Awards up for grabs – Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event or Project of the Year,” said Cr Milne.  “So often the people who work behind the scenes go unnoticed and this is an opportunity to stand up and honor those people.”

The nomination process is relatively simple, with nomination forms available from Council’s Service Centres and from Council's website.

“You just need to complete the questions by telling us why you are nominating this person or group and return the form to us by Thursday 12 November,” said Cr Milne.

“Once nominations have closed, Councillors will read through the nominations and select the award winners based on their contributions to our community.

“The most important thing to remember about these Awards is that they aren’t aimed at the most publicised or the most obvious public figures.  The Australia Day Awards are for anyone who is a local hero, anyone who is truly unselfish, community minded and inspirational in their actions.”

This year Council awarded three Australia Day Awards to people and groups who made an outstanding contribution to local lives and communities during 2014.  This year’s winners were:

Young Citizen of the Year – Rachel White

Citizen of the Year – Michael Hellwege

Community Event/Project of the Year – Ouyen - Mallee Up in Lights

“If you have any questions about the process or need help with your nomination form, please contact Council staff who will be more than happy to assist you in any way.  They are also available to come to your community meeting and talk directly to you about the process,” Cr Milne said.

“This is a fantastic way to say “Thank you” to someone who has assisted you this year or even over a number of years.”

Australia Day Award nominations are open now and close on 12 November 2015.  Nomination forms are available from all Mildura Rural City Council Service Centres and online at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/australiadayawards
