Australia Day is a chance to celebrate our community’s achievements

Mildura’s annual Australia Day event at Nowingi Place this week will celebrate the achievements of our three Australia Day Award winners, as well as welcoming 40 residents to be our community’s newest Australian citizens.
Mildura Mayor Liam Wood said the Australia Day Awards presentations and Citizenship ceremony were among the highlights of each year’s Australia Day event.
“Celebrating the achievements of our local residents and welcoming our newest Australians is what Australia Day is all about,” Cr Wood said.
“It’s about celebrating what it means to be Australians, the achievements we can be so proud of, and embracing our latest Australian citizens.
“It’s also about remembering how fortunate we are to enjoy our way of life.”

The Mayor will preside over the Australia Day Citizenship ceremony where 40 people from 14 different nations will become Australians.
They hail from countries including India, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Bangladesh and Romania.
Cr Wood said he was looking forward to returning to Nowingi Place for Mildura’s Australia Day celebration this week.
“There have been so many major events and opportunities to join together that we’ve had to pass up over the past two years due to the ongoing pandemic, and it’s good to see that we’re breaking out of that and able to once again join together as a community to celebrate these important occasions,” the Mayor said.
Wednesday’s Mildura Australia Day event will start at 8am at Nowingi Place and include a free Lions Club breakfast and live entertainment.
The event will be subject to COVID-19 restrictions, with details subject to change in line with Victorian Government health advice.
Those attending are encouraged to practice COVID-safe principles, including social distancing and hand hygiene. Residents are encouraged to watch for any COVID symptoms, and stay home if they are feeling unwell.
Residents planning to attend our Australia Day event are encouraged to take note of any forecast warmer weather and prepare accordingly, including wearing a hat, applying sunscreen and drinking plenty of water on the day. Picnic rugs and chairs are BYO.
