Award-winning play about the stolen generations to be staged at MAC

Mildura Arts Centre will host an impressive Australian play by award-winning Melbourne-based theatre company She Said Theatre early next month, dubbed HART.

A verbatim theatre piece, HART examines the difficult and harrowing history of the stolen generations from the perspectives of four Noongar men spanning three generations – including performer Ian Michael, who won both the 2015 Melbourne Fringe Best Emerging Indigenous Artist award and the 2016 Adelaide Fringe Emerging Artist for his work on HART.

Michael said that for him, HART was much more than simply a performing role.

“As a young Indigenous person and performer, it’s vital to be able to tell the stories and the truth from my people, especially stories of survival and resilience,” he said.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica described HART as very well written and wonderfully performed, and recommended for everyone over 12-years-old.

“I believe that everyone should go and see HART. It’s relevant for people affected by the stolen generations, interested in Indigenous culture, Australian politics and history, as well as theatre lovers and students studying history, drama and law,” Cr Modica said.
