Behind the scenes support vital
Published on 10 September 2015
Did you know that when someone in our community is faced with the need for disaster relief, accommodation or support, the first people on the scene are often Mildura Rural City Council’s Community Development Officers?
This year Council staff have already responded to 12 community disasters, the majority of which have been house fires.
Community Development and Safety portfolio Councillor Ali Cupper explained that members of Council’s Community Futures team serve as Single Incident Response officers and are often the first point of contact, after the emergency services have arrived on the scene, for those involved in disasters.
“In 2014 Council responded to 10 incidents and already we’re up to 12 this year,” Cr Cupper said.
“When there is a disaster such as a house fire, the people involved are often in shock and need immediate, essential support. Council staff help set up the short term, immediate needs for people – accommodation, clothing, personal items, meals and even somewhere for pets to go.
“They put people in touch with services such as the Department of Health & Human Services, Red Cross and Salvation Army who take over with specialised support depending on the situation.”
Matt, is one such community member who recently came in contact with this community service. Matt’s parents were involved in a house fire and needed to leave their home for an extended time.
“At first you’re just so thankful to see everyone in one piece,” Matt explained. “But then reality sets in and you just have no idea where to go for help.
“You’re in shock so you really aren’t thinking clearly and having someone come in and sort out the everyday things people take for granted, really sets you on the right track. It was an amazing support.”
Cr Cupper explained that some people involved in traumatic events are hesitant to ask for help.
“This is what this service is for,” she said. “It’s part of the way we give back to our community by providing people with safety and reassurance.”
Council staff involved in the Single Incident Response team will be attending the Community Cinema Night and Safety Expos being held around the region next month and will be available to speak to people about how the service works.
The Community Cinema Night and Safety Expos will be held on the following dates with each event starting at 5pm and the movies starting on dusk.
