Bombs away at Mildura Eco Village

Published on 09 August 2016

It will be all out war of a very different kind this weekend when Greening Mildura, Sunraysia Sustainability Network and Mildura Rural City Council’s Eco Village unleash their native seed “bombs” on the Eco Village drainage basin.

Students from local primary schools have been busily making the seed bombs for several weeks now using a muddy process that involves rolling seeds into clay balls.

Environmental Sustainability portfolio Councillor Judi Harris is inviting everyone to come along to the Eco Village on Sunday 14 August and help launch the bombs into a designated area.

“We’ve used native seeds in the bombs including native acacias, wattles, salt bush and eucalyptus which will help re-vegetate the drainage basin at the rear of the Eco Village,” Cr Harris explained.  “The new growth will help create a natural wind buffer and will help to keep dust and weeds from spreading.

“The seeds will have everything they need for a good start in life. The clay binds the seed, while they wait for rain. Once it does, the organic matter expands, crumbling the bombs as the seed germinates.”

The Community Seed Bombing day will kick off at 11am on Sunday 14 August at the Mildura Eco Village.  The village will be open for those who would like to wander through and people can check out the facilities including the community garden, application forms for garden beds will be available on the day.  A BBQ lunch will also be provided on the day.

“We really want to think Greening Mildura for coming up with this great idea and for working closely with the schools to help make the seed bombs,” Cr Harris said.
