Breakthrough to improve safety at notorious Deakin Avenue intersection
Published on 27 February 2025
Mildura Rural City Council has welcomed today’s breakthrough announcement by the Australian Government of funding to install traffic lights at the intersection of Deakin Avenue and Sixteenth Street.
Mildura’s Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Infrastructure and Assets Ali Cupper said Council has advocated to all levels of government for much needed safety upgrades at this intersection since at least 2020.
“Council has been acutely aware of ongoing safety concerns at this intersection for many years,” Cr Cupper said.
“We’ve shared in the community’s frustration in the time it’s taken to see safety improvements to what has really become a notorious black spot in terms of accidents.
“It’s great to see the Victorian Government and Australian Government partnering together to provide this funding under the Road Safety Program and we look forward to this project being delivered as soon as possible to avoid more accidents occurring at this intersection.
“This result is also just reward for the many residents and road users in our community who have campaigned for many years to see safety concerns at this site addressed – well done, your voices have been heard!
“I’d also like to thank our elected representatives at all levels of government for adding their voice to see these critical safety upgrades become a reality.”
