Call out for nominations for Youth Ambassador Committee

Published on 30 January 2015

Five years after its inception, Mildura Rural City Council’s Youth Ambassador program is still going strong and is looking for new members to join the committee.

The Mildura Youth Ambassador Committee was established in 2010 with an aim to get young people in years 7 to 10 involved in leading their local community.

Community Wellbeing and Services portfolio Councillor Sharyon Peart said the program has grown over the past five years, with previous members going to work with Council on other projects and committees.

“The Mildura Youth Ambassador Committee is a great stepping stone for teenagers to become involved in the future direction of their local community. They are given support and training to become advocates for the young people in our region,” explained Cr Peart.

Members of the Youth Ambassador Committee are key to helping Council staff develop programs to directly address issues of importance to local young people and are given the opportunity to build their own communication, leadership, teamwork and advocacy skills.

“Council sees programs such as this, the FReeZA Program and the Youth Advisory Committee as important skill building opportunities for the whole community, not just for our young people,” Cr Peart explained.

“You don’t need to be a confident public speaker or to be particularly outgoing to join this group - you just need to be able to commit your time and to have a passion for local youth issues.

“Please give this some serious consideration,” said Cr Peart. “It really is an opportunity for youth leaders to come to the table and make a real difference to their community.”

Applications for the Mildura Youth Ambassador Committee are now open, with nominations closing on Friday 27 February at 5pm. Terms of reference for the committee, nomination forms and further information is available from Youth Services online at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/youth or by contacting staff on (03) 5018 8280 or youthservices@mildura.vic.gov.au
