Past and present Mildura Maternal and Child Health Nurses and staff are being invited to come together to celebrate 100 years of guiding and caring for Victorian families.

A morning tea will be held at the Benetook Room of the Alfred Deakin Centre next month as part of statewide celebrations marking 100 years of the Maternal and Child Health Service in Victoria.

The event will celebrate the role of Maternal and Child Health Nurses who worked for either the Mildura Rural City Council, or former Mildura Shire Council.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Community Wellbeing and Services Ali Cupper said these nurses have served a vital role in the region for decades, touching the lives of thousands of Sunraysia residents.

“Our dedicated Maternal and Child Health Nurses, both past and present, have supported, advised and guided thousands of mothers in our region for many decades, providing an invaluable service for our community,” Cr Cupper said.

“In many ways, they serve an even more important role in regional areas given the distance to specialised services elsewhere in the state.

“It’s fantastic to see the many decades of service they’ve provided recognised in this way.”

Council’s Maternal and Child Health Service can trace its origins back to 1924, when the Mildura Baby Clinic was officially opened by Mildura Mayor Howard Paul on 12 May.

As part of the Mildura celebrations, past and present Maternal and Child Health Nurses and staff, as well as current Mildura Rural City Councillors and other stakeholders, will be invited to a morning tea next month.

The morning tea will be held at the Benetook Room of the Alfred Deakin Centre on Thursday, 6 July from 9am and will be followed by the official opening of the Maternal Child Health Exhibition.

“This event is not only a chance to highlight the contribution of our Maternal and Child Health Nurses to our community, but also a great opportunity for former colleagues to reunite and share stories from the past,” Cr Cupper said.
