Mildura Rural City Council is partnering with the First Peoples of Millewa Mallee Aboriginal Corporation and our Ngiwa Yarna Committee to host a special Cultural Event ahead of National Reconciliation Week (NRW) and National Sorry Day.

The event will feature arts and crafts, traditional food and cultural entertainment and will be held on Saturday 25 May at Rio Vista Park from 11am to 3pm.

First Peoples of Millewa Mallee Interim CEO Ken Knight encouraged the community to come out and support the event.

“National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) is a significant time for all Australians to delve into our shared histories, cultures and accomplishments,” Mr Knight said.

“It’s an opportunity to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year's theme ‘Now More Than Ever’ serves as a powerful reminder that regardless of challenges, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must continue.

“Now more than ever we need connection, respect, action and change.”

Mr Knight said National Sorry Day, held annually on 26 May, would also acknowledge and recognise members of Australia’s Stolen Generations.

“This day also gives people from all walks of life and backgrounds the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities,” he said.

“Our Cultural Event on May 25 will serve as the perfect opportunity to launch National Reconciliation Week locally.”

Councillor for Community Development Helen Healy said there was also an opportunity for local performers and stallholders to come forward and be a part of the Cultural Event.

“This is your chance to help showcase and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history,” Cr Healy said.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers and stallholder interested in being part of the event can contact Council’s Aboriginal Community Development Officer Maria Conroy at maria.conroy@mildura.vic.gov.au for more information.
