Chaffey Engine given new home on Mildura Riverfront
Published on 13 September 2016
A historic part of Mildura’s irrigation history has found a new home at the Mildura riverfront, with the “Billabong” Engine to go on display this week.
Built in Birmingham England by Tangye Pty Ltd, the George Chaffey designed engine was shipped to Australia and brought to Mildura by train and river barge in 1889 and was the first of four engines used to pump water to the early farmers in our region.
Mr Ron Leamon from the Psyche Bend Historic Committee said the pump is an integral part of our irrigation history.
“Originally located at the Cooke Street pump house on the edge of Kings Billabong, the pump operated until 1955 before it was decommissioned and relocated to Mildura,” Mr Leamon explained.
“The engine had been in storage until 2010 when Lower Murray Water donated the engine to the Psyche Bend Historic Reserve Committee who, with the support of a Council grant and in consultation with the Sunraysia Stem Preservation Society, have had the engine repainted and aesthetically restored to its original colours.”
Chairman of the Chaffey Trail Reference Group, Mark Eckel is excited to see this important part of our recent history given such a high profile as part of the riverfront redevelopment.
“There has been quite a bit of discussion about the most appropriate place for the Billabong engine,” Mr Eckel explained. “It will be positioned on the West Promenade of the Rowing Club lawns, opposite the Powerhouse and Jaycee Park, which is in keeping with its historical links to the river.
“It is identical to the Psyche engine and while the Billabong engine will not be operational, we hope this visible site will encourage more people to discover the Chaffey Trail and learn about our irrigation history.”
The Billabong Engine will be craned into place today at around 10am, with a historical plaque to be unveiled during a formal presentation at a later date.
Further information about Tangye produced engines in our region is available from the Chaffey Trail website at www.thechaffeytrail.com.au or from the Mildura Visitor Information Centre.
