Mildura Rural City Council has put alternative arrangements in place to empty kerbside bins that are scheduled for collection on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Bins that would normally be emptied on Monday 25 December and Monday 1 January will be emptied on the following Wednesday this festive season.

Usual collection date               Alternate collection date

Monday 25 December 2023       Wednesday 27 December 2023
Monday 1 January 2024             Wednesday 3 January 2024

All other collection dates remain unchanged.

Environment and Sustainability Portfolio Councillor Jason Modica said this change would impact around 5,500 properties in Mildura, Ouyen and along the Mallee Track.

“If you would usually put your bins out on a Sunday evening to be emptied on a Monday, then this change applies to you,” Cr Modica said.

“Residents are reminded to always put their bins out the night before their collection day, and to leave it out all day because trucks can come any time between 5am and 9pm.”

Mildura Rural City Council is also urging residents to be waste-wise this festive season and avoid creating excess waste wherever possible.

“If you’re getting together with friends and family for meals and celebrations, please consider how you can do this sustainably,” Cr Modica said.

The average Victorian household throws out approximately $2,200 worth of food each year, according to Sustainability Victoria.

Planning your meals, making a shopping list, only purchasing what you need, eating leftovers and storing your food correctly can help reduce food waste.

“Any food scraps you have to get rid of should be put in your green Food and Garden Organics bin so they can be recycled in to compost,” Cr Modica said.

Most aluminium, glass, plastic and liquid paperboard (carton) drink containers between 150mL and 3 litres can be cashed in for a 10c refund through the State Government’s new Container Deposit Scheme.

Alternatively, residents are encouraged to sort recyclables like cardboard, glass, aluminium and rigid plastic to be recycled in their yellow kerbside recycling bin.

If your bins are already full, you can recycle many items for free at your nearest Transfer Station. All Mildura Rural City Council-operated facilities will be open throughout the holidays, except on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
