Clean Up Australia Day focus on our most valuable natural asset

Mildura residents have a chance to do their part to ensure our city’s beautiful riverfront precinct continues to look its best as part of a special Clean Up Australia Day community event this weekend.
The Sunraysia Sustainability Network and Mildura Rural City Council have teamed up to organise a community fun and clean-up event at the Nowingi Place this Sunday, 5 March.
Starting at 10am, residents will meet at the Nowingi Place where they will be given Clean Up Australia Day bags for both general and recyclable litter before joining other community members in ensuring the area between the sound shell and Water Play Park area is free of rubbish.
The event will conclude with a free community barbecue starting at midday.
Mildura Rural City Councillor for Environmental Sustainability Anthony Cirillo said that while this weekend’s event served a practical, environmental purpose, it was also a chance for residents to be part of a fun community initiative.
“Our riverfront is one of our most valuable natural assets which we all benefit from,” Cr Cirillo said.
“Whether it’s simply enjoying spending time along our newly completed riverfront precinct or the economic benefits we receive through visitor numbers, it’s an asset we should all do something to protect.
“Clean Up Australia Day is not only a chance to protect this asset, but a unique opportunity to be part of a fun, community event with like-minded residents.”
People wishing to be part of the event can either register as a volunteer at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/Mildura+Riverfront or simply join on the day.
Clean Up Australia Day is the country’s largest community-based environmental event that sees hundreds of thousands of residents across the nation volunteer their time each year to do their part for their local environment.
Since the event’s inception in 1990, Australians have devoted more than 31 million hours and collected more than 331,000 tonnes of rubbish as part of Clean Up Australia Day activities.
