Cleaning Up at the Eco Village
Published on 23 February 2016
Mildura Rural City Council is hoping a Clean Up Australia Day event at the Mildura Eco Village, will introduce more people to the fantastic environmental work happening on the site.
Clean Up Australia Day has been held annually since 1990 and last year an estimated 526,268 volunteers removed more than 13,933 tonnes of rubbish from our streets, bushland, parks and waterways. It is estimated over 302,000 tonnes of rubbish has been collected as part of this project since it started.
Environmental Sustainability portfolio Councillor Judi Harris said this is a great opportunity for people to get out and meet new people, to contribute to cleaning up waste in our region and to learn more about the environmental initiatives happening in our region.
“Clean Up Australia Day is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to get out and do a little bit to keep our region looking great,” Cr Harris said.
“The Eco Village promotes sustainable living initiatives and helps individuals and businesses to find ways to reduce the impact they have on our environment. If you’ve never visited the site before, this is a great opportunity to check out all the different activities they have on offer.”
While the Eco Village site is Council’s official Clean Up Australia Day meeting point, seven other sites have also been registered locally.
“That’s one of the great things about Clean Up Australia Day – it may be a national event, but it’s all about community and having pride in where we live.”
Council’s Clean Up Australia Day event starts at 10am on Sunday 6 March with participants encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, bring garden gloves if you have them and to wear appropriate sun protection. A BBQ lunch and drinking water will also be supplied.
