Mildura’s new Riverfront Water Play precinct will be officially opened on Sunday 4 October, with an afternoon of fun activities planned for the whole family.

The Water Play area was opened to the public in August with the initial trial period proving extremely popular.

Economic Development and Tourism portfolio Councillor John Arnold said the Community Fun Day this Sunday is a way for Council to say thank you to the community for their support during the construction period.

“With the weather forecast to be very warm this weekend, it’s a great chance to get down to the Water Play precinct and really check it out,” Cr Arnold said. “There’s heaps of free entertainment and activities planned for the afternoon, with a focus on being healthy and active.”

Official proceedings will start at 1pm with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country, before the fun begins with a wide array of activities including percussion and craft workshops, a reptile zone and gardening advice.  Entertainment including The Amazing Drumming Monkeys variety show, the Ukelele Club and belly-dancers will continue throughout the afternoon.

Visitors over the age of 18 will also have the opportunity to win 2-nights family accommodation in Melbourne and a tour of Vision Australia’s National Puppy Centre, by taking place in the White Cane Walk which is being held at 2pm.  Participants will need to navigate a set course blindfolded, with only their sense of hearing and a white cane to guide them.

“It’s set to be a great day and with the warm weather, we really would like people to remember to come prepared with sunscreen and to bring along some alternative shade like a beach umbrella if you have it,” Cr Arnold said.  “Bring your chairs and picnic blankets as well, as we’re expecting a big crowd."

There will be free oranges and water available and also be yummy healthy options for purchase including a healthy BBQ with vegetarian choices and ice-blocks.

The Water Play area is part of the $18.3 million project to reinvigorate the iconic riverfront precinct and includes new public amenities at Nowingi Place, new BBQ facilities, pathways, workout stations, upgrades at the Skate Park and landscaping in the area.

The Mildura Riverfront Precinct Redevelopment is funded through the Federal Government, State Government of Victoria and Mildura Rural City Council.
