Council partnering with government to provide jobs boost

Sunraysia residents looking for work are encouraged to apply for 14 new positions at Mildura Rural City Council funded by the Victorian Government’s Working for Victoria program.
Council has received a grant of more than $520,000 to provide additional employment opportunities following the economic impacts of COVID-19.
The Victorian Government announced the Working for Victoria grant earlier this month, which will allow Council to provide 14 additional full-time equivalent positions for six months.
These positions will be either new or expanded roles aimed at supporting the government’s COVID-19 response in our region, while providing employment opportunities for residents out of work. This includes people who may have lost their jobs due to the impacts of COVID-19, or have been without work for a longer period of time.
Council will offer the following jobs:
Garden Waste Attendant
Attendants will staff the green waste pile at Mildura Landfill to ensure social distancing and that rubbish is not being dumped at the pile, particularly given the increase in customers dropping off garden waste.
Litter Officer
This position will assist in picking up litter around the landfill, golf course and neighbouring areas.
Cleaners
Cleaners will provide additional community and touch-point cleaning. This will include hydration stations, playground equipment, park benches, handrails, community building touch points in libraries, early childhood facilities, community health facilities, civic buildings and recreation facilities.
Facility Maintenance Officer
This positon will provide additional open space maintenance to equipment, park benches, hydration stations and small repair projects.
Facility Inspection and Data Collection Officer
This position will identify reactive maintenance works through additional inspections and collect data for the preparation of maintenance plans that are not currently being conducted.
Tree Planting/Gardeners
The tree planting positions will undertake tree planting works as required. This includes preparing the site, planting and staking the trees, installing green wells and watering the trees in.
The general gardening positions will undertake tasks including mowing, edging and brush cutting grassed areas, hand-weeding, blowing down hard surfaces, mulching gardens and litter removal.
Mildura Mayor Simon Clemence said the initiative would serve an important role matching people who have lost their jobs with employers who need additional staff.
“We know there are many in our community who are doing it tough at the moment, whether they’re employers or employees,” Cr Clemence said.
“This initiative is a great way for us to partner with the Victorian Government through the Working for Victoria program to support our community with new opportunities for employment.”
