Mildura Rural City Council is working on new rules to guide future development and construction along the iconic Deakin Avenue in Mildura.

The Deakin Avenue Urban Design Guidelines will set the framework for new construction along the entire length of Deakin Avenue, from Seventh Street through to the bend just past Seventeenth Street.

Infrastructure and Transport portfolio Councillor Greg Brown said the guidelines would look at a number of factors including what sort of buildings can be constructed and how those buildings will look.

“The Guidelines are being prepared so we can make sure this important gateway to our city always looks terrific.  It needs to reflect our history, our heritage and needs to stand the test of time,” Cr Brown said.  “We’re asking people to think about how they want Deakin Avenue to look in the next 10, 20 or 30 years.”

Stage 1 of the planning for the Deakin Avenue Urban Design Guidelines will see a number of community groups and stakeholders invited to attend public consultations, with the general public also asked to give feedback.

“Driving along Deakin Avenue there is a real cross-section of businesses, residential properties, schools, service providers and even rural properties.  We need to find a balance that ensures this important carriage way caters for the needs of all these different stakeholders.”

A survey and map has been produced for the purpose of allowing everyone to put forward their ideas, any issues they see and any opportunities for improvement.

Cr Brown said the project will integrate with Council’s continuing landscape works for the central median by focusing on the buildings and structures on either side of the avenue.

“Obviously the overall amenity needs to be consistent and integrate with the central median on Deakin Avenue, but the guidelines will concentrate on what we want our built environment, such as buildings and houses to look like.”

Surveys and further information are available from Council’s Deakin Avenue and Madden Avenue Services Centres, as well as online at http://www.mildura.vic.gov.au/haveyoursay with initial ideas and suggestions welcome until Wednesday 10 June 2015.

There will be further opportunities for the community to be involved in subsequent stages, however Council are urging people to make suggestions as soon as possible.
