Council services serve up summer of school holiday fun

Published on 18 December 2014

There’ll be no excuse for bored young people over the school holidays with Mildura Rural City Council offering a range of activities for primary and secondary schoolers alike this summer.

Low cost, fun programs are planned at local libraries, the Mildura Arts Centre and through Council’s youth services unit.

Councillor Jill Joslyn said the school holidays were the perfect time for young people to try something new and she encouraged local families to make the most of the activities on offer.

“The programs at our libraries focus on craft and creativity and are always very well-attended by primary aged children,” Cr Joslyn said. “This summer we’re also running five Lego-making sessions which should be very popular.”

“The library is a lovely place to be on hot summer days and we’re pleased to have holiday activities scheduled at our Mildura, Merbein, Red Cliffs and Irymple branches this summer.”

Activities at local libraries cost just $1.60 per child and will run from 6 January to 23 January 2015. Library school holiday activity programs are available from all library branches, online at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/library  or by calling (03) 5018 8361.

The Mildura Arts Centre will also host creative activities for children aged five and up this summer with their 'Hands on Art' program. Kids can draw, create paper animals, jewellery and decorate beards at the free workshops which will be offered on January 20, 21 and January 22 from 10:30am. To book a spot or find out more call Mildura Arts Centre on (03) 5018 8330.

Meanwhile Council’s Youth Services unit has secondary school-aged people covered with two weeks of holiday action running from 19 January to 30 January. Activities this summer include a Masterchef-inspired cooking challenge, cupcakes, cookies and nail art session, indoor sports and a huge pool party at Mildura Waves.

Community Services Councillor Sharyon Peart said activities cost $15 or less and some were free.

“When you consider the planned activities, there really is no excuse for young people in our region to be bored during the holiday period,” Cr Peart said.

“The youth services team put so much effort into creating a program that offers an array of activities relevant to young people with different interests and passions.”

For more information about school holiday activities for secondary aged students or a full program call Council on (03) 5018 8100.
