Council storm recovery efforts

Published on 17 November 2016

Mildura Rural City Council is now moving into its recovery phase following last Friday’s storm event and will make several changes to current relief efforts.

The Relief Centre at the Benetook Room of the Alfred Deakin Centre, which has been operating from 9am to 4pm daily since last Saturday, will close at 4pm tomorrow (Friday 18 November).

However, residents in need of assistance can still contact Council’s recovery assistance line on 5018 8100 to seek assistance or be directed to the appropriate support network.

Council has also extended its Mildura Landfill opening hours this weekend to assist residents removing storm-related waste.

The landfill will be open for an extra hour on Saturday and Sunday – from 7am to 3.45pm. This will be reviewed after the weekend.

Due to heavy demand for the landfill, people can expect delays and are urged to be patient.

For a limited time, the landfill is offering free disposal of storm-related hard rubbish, provided there is clear evidence the waste was a result of storm damage. Residents are urged to sort their rubbish where ever possible to ensure recyclable items are separated.

Council staff have also started the process of cleaning nature strips of fallen trees. Up to now, Council has been prioritising fallen trees on nature strips if they’ve either posed a hazard or blocked access.

These efforts will now shift to clearing nature strips. Given the number of fallen trees, this will take time and we ask the public to be patient.

Fallen trees on private property remain residents’ responsibility, however if they pose a serious safety risk, please contact Council on 5018 8100.
