Mildura Rural City Council hopes World Environment Day this weekend will entice locals to consider what they can do to reduce their impact on the environment.

Held on Sunday 5 June, World Environment Day is an annual global event aimed at celebrating and encouraging positive environmental action.  This year, Council is supporting a community tree planting morning at the Mildura Eco Village.

Environmental Sustainability portfolio Councillor Judi Harris said the day was a great reminder of the important responsibility we all have to look after our natural resources.

“Now more than ever we have the chance to make a positive impact on the environment around us, simply by adopting small changes to the way we live,” she said.

Cr Harris said rather than being overwhelmed by the call to live more sustainably, locals should consider making a commitment to changing one thing in their home, office, workplace or lifestyle that will benefit the environment.

“Whether it’s choosing to walk to work a couple of days a week instead of driving; to buy organic fruit and vegies; start composting or embrace energy efficient appliances; if we all take small steps we can make a big difference.”

Tree planting at the Mildura Eco Village starts at 10am on Sunday 5 June and runs until 12pm with over 100 native trees to be planted.
