Mildura Rural City Councillors will next month decide whether to purchase a historically significant building in the city’s central business district.

Council has indicated its intention to acquire the building at 70 Deakin Avenue, between Eighth and Ninth Streets, pending community feedback.

If Councillors decide to buy the building, it will be purchased through borrowings in the proposed 2024/2025 Draft Budget.

Built in 1922, the 551sqm property was the first Mildura Shire offices before the Shire relocated its main offices to Irymple.

Mildura Mayor Liam Wood encouraged the community to provide its feedback, which he said was critical to any decision on such a potentially significant purchase.

“As with any purchase of this kind, particularly when it requires new borrowings in the upcoming budget, we need to ensure we understand the community’s views, which will be considered as part of any decision,” Cr Wood said.

Residents can provide their feedback on the proposed purchase as part of the 2024/2025 Draft Budget consultation process at yoursay.mildura.vic.gov.au/Budget24-25 or by emailing mrcc@mildura.vic.gov.au
