Fifteenth Street road works on track for reopening

The major reconstruction of a section of one of Mildura’s busiest roads is nearing completion with Mildura Rural City Council hoping to reopen Fifteenth Street at least a week earlier than originally planned.

Council has allocated $850,000 of Roads to Recovery funding to reconstruct and resurface 600 metres of Fifteenth Street between Deakin Avenue and Walnut Avenue.

Infrastructure and Transport Portfolio Councillors Greg Brown is encouraging residents and road users to remain patient and to obey the road closures while the finishing touches are applied to the works.

“As the final asphalting and road resurfacing takes place, the road might look like it’s almost finished but until those signs come down, it’s still a work site and not safe to reopen completely,” Cr Brown said.

Prior to the works starting around 9,000 vehicles used the road every day, making it one of the busiest corridors in the region.

Modifications to the Deakin Avenue roundabout approach have also be made and an additional lane added to the approach.  This will allow two vehicles to enter the intersection at once, reducing congestion and improving safety.

Once complete the road works will have included new kerb and channel, excavation of the existing road base, construction of new road base, asphalt surfacing and line marking. Lower Murray Water also took the opportunity to install new infrastructure under the road surface early in the project.

“We really want to thank all the residents and business in the area in particular for their patience, as well as those people who have been impacted by extra traffic on the alternative routes around the works.”

It is expected that the section of road will reopen by 10 July 2016 (subject to continued favourable weather condition).
