Fifteenth Street set for major reconstruction works

A major reconstruction on a section of one of Mildura’s busiest roads will get underway next month.
Mildura Rural City Council will spend about $850,000 and up to six months rebuilding and resurfacing 600 metres of Fifteenth Street between Deakin Avenue and Walnut Avenue.
Currently about 9,000 vehicles use the road every day, making it one of the busiest corridors in the region. Infrastructure and Transport Portfolio Councillor Greg Brown said upgrading the road would ensure it could withstand even more traffic in to the future.
“Over time all roads deteriorate, particularly those that are used as frequently as Fifteenth Street,” Cr Brown said.
“This upgrade is a complete reconstruction and will see the road rebuilt from below the surface up, to provide a safer, smoother surface for motorists.”
Modifications to the Deakin Avenue roundabout approach will also be made. An additional lane will be added to the approach, which will allow two vehicles to enter the intersection at once, reducing congestion and improving safety.
Roadworks are scheduled to get underway next month and will include new kerb and channel, excavation of the existing road base, construction of new road base, asphalt surfacing and line marking.
Prior to Council commencing roadworks, Lower Murray Water will start work on site next week upgrading water main beneath the road surface.
Manager Engineering Brian Smith from Lower Murray Water said coinciding their works with Council was timed to minimise disruption to motorists and residents in the area.
“We are upgrading the water main and install new PSP pipe along Fifteenth Street between Deakin and Walnut Avenues and undertake works within the roundabouts at Fifteenth Street and Walnut Avenue,” Mr Smith said.
There will be significant disruptions to traffic along Fifteenth Street for the duration of the entire road works project, which is scheduled for completion in July, weather permitting.
Local residents will be able to access the site to enter their properties. But other than that, Fifteenth Street will be closed between Deakin Avenue and Walnut Avenue for several months, with no parking permitted in the work site.
“We appreciate this closure will add extra travel time to many people’s daily commutes and are therefore encouraging people to please be patient, plan ahead and allow for the detours required. If possible, simply avoid using the area when you can,” Cr Brown said.
