Final community movie night this weekend
Published on 10 November 2015
Communities around our region have been treated to free outdoor movie nights and safety expos, with the final event to be held at The Nowingi Place this weekend.
Mildura Rural City Council has been hosting the events in an effort to educate more people about the importance of our local Emergency Services and to encourage people to do their bit to protect their friends and family.
Community Development and Safety portfolio Councillor Ali Cupper said while the free movie is a great draw card, the aim is to raise awareness about the emergency services available in each community, including health services.
“So far we’ve been pleased with the number of people attending the events, with the first three being held in some of our smaller communities,” Cr Cupper said. “People have really loved all the demonstrations and interactive activities from our local emergency services., with Mildura set to be the biggest of the four events.”
“One of the highlights has been the Siren Scream just before the movies start and this will be happening at the Mildura event too. Siren Screams involve all the Emergency Service vehicles showing off their sirens and lights. We’re letting people know about this early as it can be a bit noisy!”
Victoria Police, the CFA, SES, Department of Justice, Red Cross, Ambulance Victoria and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning are some of the services attending.
Headspace, Mallee Family Care, Latrobe University, Mildura Life Saving Club, Nangiloc Community Emergency Response Team and local school groups have also participated in the events.
“As a region, we are quite isolated and it’s important to realise that real community safety can only be achieved when all these services combine to create wonderful physical and social environments,” Cr Cupper explained.
“Some of the attendees will be available to talk to you about volunteer opportunities with their organisations as well.”
The final Community Cinema Night and Safety Expos will be held on Saturday 14 November starting at 5pm and the family movie Minions starting on dusk, with catering available for purchase.
