Five year plan aims to address and improve community safety

Extensive research along with community feedback and consultation, has been integral to the development of the draft Community Safety Plan which will go on public exhibition today.
The draft plan was prepared by the Northern Mallee Community Partnership (NMCP) and was endorsed by Mildura Rural City Council at last night’s Ordinary Meeting. It outlines how Council and other partnering organisations will work together to address and improve perceptions of community safety within our community over the next five years.
Community Development and Safety Portfolio Councillor Ali Cupper described the draft Plan as an important community document and encouraged locals to review it and provide feedback on its contents.
“The Plan is broken in to six key areas that will be addressed to improve community safety. These include safe and well-maintained public spaces, partnerships and collaboration supporting people, community strengthening and capacity building initiatives, communication, media and safety messages, reducing harm associated with alcohol and minimising the impact of illicit drugs in the community,” Cr Cupper said.
“Within each of these areas are specific goals and actions that the Northern Mallee Community Partnership will focus on, with the ultimate goal of improving people’s perceptions of safety in our community.”
Among the 32 actions identified in the draft Community Safety Plan are expanding the CCTV network in Mildura’s CBD, conducting a safe communities forum, activation plans for key public spaces and supporting the continuation of the Neighbourhood Watch program.
Copies of the draft Community Safety Plan are available at Council’s Madden Avenue and Deakin Avenue Service Centres, the Mildura Library and online at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/haveyoursay
Feedback on the draft plan is invited and can be made in writing, over the phone or via email up until 24 April 2015.
“Safety is something that impacts us all, and everyone has the right to feel safe and secure in our community,” Cr Cupper said.
