Five year plan to address and improve community safety
Published on 29 May 2015
Mildura’s first Community Safety Plan was formally endorsed by Councillors at last night’s monthly meeting with extensive research and community consultation the basis for this important document.
The plan was prepared by the Northern Mallee Community Partnership (NMCP) and outlines how Council and the eleven other partnering organisations will work together to address and improve perceptions of community safety within our community over the next five years.
Community Development and Safety Portfolio Councillor Ali Cupper described the Plan as a major step forward and would help to improve the communities overall feelings of safety.
“The Plan is broken in to six key areas that will be addressed to improve community safety. These include safe and well-maintained public spaces, partnerships and collaboration supporting people, community strengthening and capacity building initiatives, communication, media and safety messages, reducing harm associated with alcohol and minimising the impact of illicit drugs in the community,” Cr Cupper said.
“Within each of these areas are specific goals and actions which the Northern Mallee Community Partnership will focus on, with the ultimate goal of improving people’s perceptions of safety in our community.”
Chair of the Safety Operational Group, Victoria Police’s Inspector Simon Clemence said the plan gives the community a great starting point to tackle any negative feelings we might have about our personal safety.
“Perceptions are influenced by realities. So at the end of the day, if we make changes that improve overall safety, then people’s perceptions will change and then they will feel more comfortable in their environment.”
“Safety is something that impacts us all, and everyone has the right to feel safe and secure in our community,” Inspector Clemence said.
Among the 32 actions identified in the Community Safety Plan are expanding the CCTV network in Mildura’s CBD, conducting a safe communities forum, activation plans for key public spaces and supporting the continuation of the Neighbourhood Watch program.
