Due to rising river levels, Mildura Rural City Council has implemented a number of public access restrictions and road closures across the Mildura region.

The Victorian State Emergency Service (SES) predicts the Murray River to peak in Mildura around 18 November, at a level similar to the 1996 flood event.

To prepare and protect community assets, Council has commenced works at Nowingi Place and the Water Play Park, incorporating sandbagging and earthworks.

General Manager Community, Martin Hawson said these works were a proactive measure to protect community assets and minimise the impact of the flood event to residents.

“Public safety is our first priority and we anticipate access to Nowingi Place and the Water Play Park to be closed in the coming weeks so the necessary mitigation and recovery measures can be implemented,” he said.

“While the current prediction is for the Mildura Weir to peak around the 18th of November, we will require sufficient time to implement these works. Public access will be reviewed as further updates from the SES are provided,” he said.

Apex Park has already been closed to the public, with all roads and walking tracks blocked. The property is being managed by Council and will be monitored as flood conditions change.

Peaks are predicted to last for two or three days, however, residents can expect to see high waters for several weeks after the river peaks.

Council is urging residents to be aware of any closures to roads and amenities across the region, while observing all safety signs and remaining vigilant as conditions can change rapidly.

SES is the lead agent for any emergency warnings, information or assistance which is available on their website www.ses.vic.gov.au or by phoning 132 500.

Additional flood information and key contacts can be found on Council’s website www.mildura.vic.gov.au.
