Funding boost to provide a stronger voice for our youth

Mildura Rural City Council will use the Victorian Government funding announced this week to launch a new program aimed at providing a stronger voice for youth in the region, as well as a better understanding within the community of what our youth are capable of.

Council hopes to receive the bulk of the $30,000 provided through the government’s Rural and Regional Local Government Youth Engagement Program next month.

The Partners in Youth Project is an 18-month program that will run from January 2017 to June 2018.

One of the initial aims will be to develop a youth advisory group which will support local decision-making and help foster youth leadership in the community.

A prospectus will also be produced that will be distributed to local agencies and businesses, detailing the skills, experience and capabilities of Sunraysia’s youth and the potential benefits they could offer to the community.

Community Wellbeing and Services Portfolio Councillor Ali Cupper said the program aligned with the aims of Council’s Youth Engagement Strategy.

“This program is ultimately aimed at providing a stronger voice for our youth and a better understanding of the contributions youth can make within the community,” Cr Cupper said.

“It also enhances the existing programs provided to support young people.”
