Mildura Rural City Council’s most important document – the Draft Community and Council Plan 2017 – 2021 is now out on public exhibition.

The plan guides Council’s priorities, strategies and objectives for the coming four years in four broad strategic areas – Community, Environment, Economy and Council.

Importantly, it also encapsulates and reflects the hopes, priorities and thoughts of the community following an exhaustive consultation process over many weeks earlier this year.

Council hosted dozens of community workshops across the region, allowing residents to speak face-to-face with Council staff, senior managers and Councillors.

Residents were also able to let us know what was important to them through our online surveys, generating a strong response.

Mildura Mayor Glenn Milne said community input was at the heart of the Plan.

“The Community and Council Plan 2017 – 2021 is our roadmap for the coming four years,” Cr Milne said.

“It lets us know if we’re on the right path with our current objectives and priorities, or if we need to re-examine the way we’re doing things in some areas.

“Ultimately, it ensures we’re in step with what the community feels is important, which guides the facilities and services we delivery, and provides us with direction in terms of what we could be lobbying State and Federal Governments for.”

Some of the common issues raised during the consultation process included:

  • Ensuring sustainable economic development, including attracting and supporting diverse businesses and industry, creating local employment opportunities.
  • Crime prevention, including addressing drug and alcohol issues.
  • More community events, festivals, markets, tourist attractions and major events.
  • Further development and activation of the riverfront.
  • Introduction of green/organic waste services.
  • Feeling safe in the community.
  • Development and maintenance of roads.
  • Advocate for return of the passenger train.
  • Provision and access to quality services and facilities.
  • More community consultation and engagement.
  • Rate restraint.

Councillors last week adopted the Draft Community and Council Plan 2017 – 2021, which is now on public exhibition. Copies of the plan are available for download from our website at www.mildura.vic.gov.au. Written submissions will be taken until 5pm on Monday, 5 June.

Once submissions have been collated, the Community and Council Plan 2017 – 2021 will go before next month’s Ordinary Council Meeting on Thursday, 22 June for final endorsement.
