Mildura Rural City Council will hold a series of community workshops and one-on-one sessions this week as part of a review of Council’s Alfresco Dining and Street Trader policy.

The project is part of Council’s regular review process, but has also been driven by increased growth and popularity of alfresco dining and street trading in the region over the past three years.

Councillor for Economic Development and Tourism Mark Eckel said the review would examine topics including parklets in Langtree Avenue, alfresco dining in the Langtree Mall and mobile food vending vans among a raft of topics across the municipality (excluding the riverfront precinct).

“There has been a spike in the growth of alfresco dining and street trading in recent years, which from a tourism and economic development perspective is certainly a positive step for our region,” Cr Eckel said.

“To make sure we capitalise on this growth and ensure it continues in a sustainable and manageable way, it’s important we review the way we’re doing things now and investigate where improvements or changes can be made to existing policies.

“As part of this process, we’re seeking feedback from the community, business owners, traders and other groups to collect their ideas and thoughts.”

Two community workshops and a one-on-one session will be held this Wednesday and Thursday in a bid to collect this feedback.

The two 90-minute community workshops will be held on Wednesday, 7 June at 3pm and 6pm at the Benetook Room of the Alfred Deakin Centre, and are targeted at the general community, business owners and traders, and design/development professionals.

One-on-one sessions will be held the following day, Thursday, 8 June from 9am to 11am, and are targeted at business owners and traders. These sessions are by appointment only and will be held at the Mildura City Heart office at 63a Langtree Mall. Appointments can be made by contacting Council’s Strategic Planning team on (03) 5018 8100.

Online surveys can also be taken from the Have Your Say section of Council’s website at www.mildura.vic.gov.au, while hard copy surveys are available from Council’s Deakin Avenue and Madden Avenue Service Centres. Surveys should be completed and returned by Wednesday, 21 June.

An ‘Issues and Direction’s' paper will then be produced before a draft policy is put on public exhibition for further comment.
