Have your say on our Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy
Published on 20 April 2022
The community is being encouraged to provide feedback on Mildura Rural City Council’s Draft Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2022-27.
The strategy is a vital tool in Council’s ongoing commitment to ensure our local natural environment and resources remain sustainable into the future, and has been created thanks to input from key stakeholders.
Five key priorities have been identified through the draft strategy:
- Reduce waste generation
- Increase resource recovery
- Beneficial use of organics
- Waste and resource recovery education
- Sustainable Waste and resource recovery infrastructure
The strategy also lays out a number of targets for success, including achieving zero waste to landfill by 2050, increasing waste diversion, achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions from landfill by 2050, helping the community reduce the level of waste they produce and improving community satisfaction in waste and resource recovery.
Councillor for Environment and Sustainability, Jason Modica, said the strategy aimed to help people and businesses reduce the amount of waste they generate in their day-to-day lives, while appreciating waste as a valuable resource.
“Council has a responsibility to provide effective and sustainable waste management services to our community,” Cr Modica said.
“These services assist residents, visitors and businesses to responsibly dispose of the waste they make, encourage resource recovery and improve the sustainability of our environment.”
Cr Modica said the strategy would also complement Council’s work to combat climate change.
“Landfill emissions account for approximately 68 percent of Council’s overall greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.
“Council is committed to looking carefully at our waste services and operations to address the impacts of climate change through this strategy.
“Recycling and composting waste instead of landfilling significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions.”
