Sunraysia residents have an opportunity to play a role in Mildura Rural City Council’s upcoming NAIDOC Week celebrations by being part of a traditional Corroboree on the city’s riverfront.

NAIDOC Week is a national event held in July each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This year, NAIDOC Week celebrations will kick off in Mildura on Sunday, 8 July.

Last year Council, working with the Aboriginal Action Committee, marked the occasion with a Corroboree, a traditional Aboriginal dance ceremony that brings people together and can take the form of a gathering or sacred ritual.

Councillor for Community Wellbeing and Services Min Poole said last year’s event was a resounding success, attracting international media attention.

“We had a fantastic response from both people interested in becoming involved, and from residents on the day of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, and we’re hoping to build on that this year,” Cr Poole said.

“This year we’ll be moving our Corroboree community event to Nowingi Place and we’re once again looking for community members and local groups to be involved. So if you want to run a cultural workshop, sing or play music, can cook up a tasty traditional dish, or would like to promote and sell your artwork, please get in contact.”

Applications are now open to be part of the event and must be submitted to Council by Friday, 25 May.  Application forms are available from the events page of Council’s website at https://bit.ly/2HHo7xZ

Cr Poole encouraged people to embrace this year’s event which forms part of Council’s commitment to reconciliation.

“This event fits in with the goals and values of our Reconciliation Action Plan, as well as recognition of the importance of valuing, acknowledging and celebrating the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our community,” she said.
