Impacts of SKM recycling abatement notice

Published on 22 February 2019

Mildura Rural City Council is one of many Victorian Councils impacted by the recent Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Pollution Abatement Notice issued to SKM recycling.

As a result, Council’s kerbside recycling contractor is currently unable to deliver recycling to SKM.

This will not impact on Council’s kerbside recycling service to ratepayers. Residents’ recycling bins will still be collected each fortnight, recyclable and non-recyclable items still need to be separated, and there will be no change to their collection schedule.

Council is currently investigating other recycling processors who may be able to take our recycling until SKM is able to resume processing again, however given many other Councils are in a similar position, there are limited options at this point.

Council is also working closely with the EPA to monitor existing stockpiles which we will need to manage carefully at the Mildura Landfill.

Despite many Councils already landfilling kerbside recycling, we would only consider this as a last resort.

Our community does a great job sorting waste, evidenced by our low contamination levels, which are below 10 per cent.
