Information session to discuss Murrayville library location

Council staff will be available to meet with Murrayville residents tomorrow to further discuss plans for the new place-based library in their town.

A community information session will be held outside the Murrayville Post Office from 10am to midday to provide an update on the likely location of the new library service, and how it will be established.

Tomorrow's information session follows a similar meeting earlier this year, where residents were asked to provide their feedback on three possible locations for the library service:

• Pioneer Park on the corner of Reed and Gray Streets
• Murrayville Swimming Pool site in Reed Street
• Murrayville Multipurpose Centre in Gray Street.

While residents indicated strong support for both the Murrayville Multipurpose Centre and Pioneer Park options, due to subsequent further investigation, it will be recommended to Councillors that Pioneer Park is the most suitable location.

Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said that since the three options were put up for consideration it’s been discovered there is native vegetation at the Multipurpose Centre site which, if possible, should be protected.

“As part of Council’s research into the suitability of each location, it’s been discovered there is native vegetation on this site that forms part of some threatened species,” Cr Modica said.

“Firstly, this would present additional difficulties in seeking approval to remove the vegetation, but more importantly, if we have other options available, such as Pioneer Park, it makes sense to protect the Multipurpose Centre site and go with an option that also received strong support from the community.”

Cr Modica said there were other benefits to the Pioneer Park location, including its central location, established parking nearby and the fact that residents already associate the site with Council’s library service, as the existing mobile library is normally based there. 

Other benefits include its close proximity to a playground, supermarket and post office which provides added convenience, and prominent and easily accessible location.
