People considering standing as a candidate in this year’s Local Government elections are encouraged to take advantage of several upcoming online and in-person information sessions.

The sessions, which are being delivered in partnership with the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), are aimed at equipping potential election candidates with everything they need to know about becoming a Councillor, including:

  • What is involved in being a Councillor
  • What to expect soon after the election
  • Roles and responsibilities of Councillors, including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor
  • The role of local Councils
  • Support available once you become a Councillor
  • What to consider when thinking of nominating as a candidate.

The following opportunities for residents in the Mildura Rural City Council local government area have been confirmed, with more to follow in coming weeks:

Registration for each session is essential and can be made at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/standforcouncil

Mildura Rural City Council General Manager Corporate Performance Kate Henschke encouraged potential candidates to register for the free information sessions.

“Standing for Council elections and being a voice for your community is an amazing opportunity that only comes around every four years,” Ms Henschke said.

“This month’s information sessions are a great opportunity to find out everything you need to know about standing for Council, and what is involved in being a Councillor.

“By coming along and learning more you’ll have all the information you need to decide whether to put your hand up as a candidate.”

The in-person information sessions in the Sunraysia region will provide a chance for potential candidates to speak first-hand to Council staff about standing for Council, including asking any questions. There will also be information packs to take home.
