Join Council’s White Ribbon walk and picnic
Published on 16 November 2016
MILDURA Rural City Council is inviting the community to join in a White Ribbon walk and picnic next week to show their support in the vital push to end violence against women.
The walk follows Council’s recent official status as the region’s first White Ribbon accredited workplace.
White Ribbon is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end men’s violence against women and girls, as well as promoting gender equality, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity.
This month’s walk will take place on Friday 25 November, starting in the Langtree Mall at noon.
It will take participants from Langtree Avenue to the new Langtree connection and down to the riverfront, where the walk will proceed along Hugh King Drive and up Cureton Avenue, finishing at the Mildura Arts Centre lawns.
Participants will have the opportunity to make their own White Ribbon and plant it in the garden around the Rio Vista fountain, providing a very visual show of support in the community for White Ribbon and its objectives.
White Ribbon supporters, who are encouraged to wear white on the day, can then enjoy a free barbecue lunch on the lawns of the Mildura Arts Centre or bring their own picnic.
Mildura Rural City Council Chief Executive Officer Gerard José is urging the community to join this month’s walk.
“Violence against women is a major issue both in our community and many others, making it imperative to not only raise awareness about its prevalence, but more importantly, how to prevent it happening,” Mr José said.
“As a White Ribbon accredited organisation, Council can play a vital role in ensuring this message reaches as many people as possible, and events such as this month’s White Ribbon walk are a very effective way of doing that.
“As the region’s first White Ribbon accredited organisation, we can set a very prominent example of the way in which large organisations can instil the anti-violence message throughout their culture and their staff.”
